FirstLead is a Microsoft Copilot agent delivered inside Microsoft Teams that helps newly promoted managers succeed in their first 90 days. It addresses a growing gap: more employees are being promoted into management while formal training budgets and access to mentorship are shrinking, and hybrid work reduces the informal coaching that new managers used to get “by osmosis.” At the same time, organizations are increasingly ready to adopt AI copilots in daily workflows—yet managers vary widely in their comfort and mindset around AI, creating uneven adoption and outcomes.

FirstLead is designed for a manager ecosystem with three key groups:

  1. Recently promoted, AI-ready managers who want fast, in-the-moment guidance;
  2. Recently promoted managers who are less AI-native and need more structured, trust-building support; and
  3. HR/L&D leaders who need a scalable way to onboard and support new managers consistently.

The core unmet need is practical, confidence-building guidance that is available when it matters, paired with a clear roadmap of what “good” looks like in the first 30/60/90 days.

It was presented as a project in the 2026 Microsoft Skillfest Hackathon as a single end-to-end “thin slice” demo, showcasing time-specific functionality with a weekly schedule where a newly promoted manager receives a structured first-week plan (as part of a broader 30/60/90 journey), completes key early milestones (e.g., scheduling 1:1s, preparing an introduction to the team, and setting expectations), and gets proactive check-ins and nudges inside Teams to stay on track. The experience is not just reactive Q&A: it’s a guided program with milestones, accountability, and progress tracking.

What makes FirstLead meaningfully different from a generic Copilot chat is its combination of (1) a structured 30/60/90 journey with proactive milestone check-ins and (2) a curated, expert knowledge base grounded in The Skillful Manager Academy’s methodology and recent research summarized summarized by Cesar Bejar, containing the 50 most frequently asked questions from newly promoted managers. This enables consistent, high-quality coaching at enterprise scale without custom code, helping new managers build confidence faster and helping organizations improve manager effectiveness and downstream employee experience and retention.

Its connectivity via the Microsoft ecosystem allows for a rapid integration in small, medium, and large corporations and quick customization based on MS SharePoint and the recently introduced MS IQ platform.
